Portraits: Violet Noir at Northcote Street Lanes with the Sony RX1

19 January, 2013 by amydavies

Quite simply, these are some of my favourite portraits that I’ve ever taken. I met the lovely Violet Noir via the magic of Twitter. I was reviewing the excellent Sony RX1 and wanted to see what I could do with it portrait-wise, so I put out a request on Twitter for anybody with a spare hour or two to volunteer. I couldn’t quite believe my luck when someone with blue/purple hair replied – I love people with unusual looks. I […]

Some snapshots of Bath (with a Sony RX100)

23 July, 2012 by amydavies

This year has been a fantastic year for new cameras, and the Sony RX100 has easily been one of my favourite (so far). It’s a nifty little compact camera featuring a larger than average sensor (one inch). I only had my hands on it for a few days, so on the last day I had it, I decided to take it for a quick spin around Bath for some street/architecture/slightly unusual photography.

Portraits: Elena in Bute Park (shot with the Sony a37)

19 July, 2012 by amydavies

These portraits were taken what seems like an age ago – when this big blanket of blue stuff hung in the sky and it was actually warm. Remember those crazy days of May when it was actually hot for a brief window of time? Ah to get that back again… Hopefully these will be an omen of an improvement in weather to come, and if not, hopefully they can distract for a moment anyway. I took these shots of Elena […]

Portraits: Liz shot with the Sony RX100 (a compact camera)

12 June, 2012 by amydavies

These are some of my favourite photos from this year, and feature my ever-patient and ever-photographed friend Liz, who’s back with her beautiful red hair (remember her from Penarth?) Last week, I had the privilege of getting my hands on a new camera before it was even announced, the Sony RX100 (click this link to read my review on TechRadar… it’s the highest score I’ve ever given a camera by the way).

A few quick snaps from St Fagans, Cardiff

10 June, 2012 by amydavies

I thought it would be nice to take a quick break from the barrage of portraits I’ve been blogging lately and show a few of the pictures I took in St Fagans a few weeks ago when I was testing the Sony a37. For those not in the know, it’s the museum of Welsh life, and also includes St Fagans Castle (which looked more like a big house to me from the outside – there was a wedding going on […]

Photographing with a kit lens – why you don’t (necessarily) always need the most expensive equipment

29 March, 2012 by amydavies

Yesterday I got to use the Sony Alpha a57 DSLT camera. It was supplied with the kit lens, which I have to admit that I have had my preconceptions about in the past (but it only goes down to f/3.5! but it surely won’t be sharp enough! surely the bokeh won’t be high quality!… etc). For any of my less-geeky-than-me readers, a kit lens is the basic lens that (usually) comes provided with DSLR/Ts. Most often they will be 18-55mm, […]
