Portraits: Keara in a snowy Bute Park, Cardiff with the Nikon V2

26 February, 2013 by amydavies

As you can no doubt tell by the snow in these shots, I took these a little while ago … it was actually on the same day that I set off on an epic seven hour drive to Snowdonia… I met the lovely Keara through Twitter – as I seem to meet so many people these days. I put out a request for potential models on my feed, and Keara was one (perhaps crazy) enough to volunteer. It’s great to […]

Portraits: Violet Noir at Northcote Street Lanes with the Sony RX1

19 January, 2013 by amydavies

Quite simply, these are some of my favourite portraits that I’ve ever taken. I met the lovely Violet Noir via the magic of Twitter. I was reviewing the excellent Sony RX1 and wanted to see what I could do with it portrait-wise, so I put out a request on Twitter for anybody with a spare hour or two to volunteer. I couldn’t quite believe my luck when someone with blue/purple hair replied – I love people with unusual looks. I […]

Portraits: Helen in Bath (shot with the Fuji X Pro1)

22 October, 2012 by amydavies

Anyone might think I have a penchant for redheads considering the frequency with which they appear on this blog. Well it just so happens that most of the redheads I know are really game for posing for portraits – maybe having bright hair makes you more confident than the average brunette or blonde? Anyway, this is my friend Helen in the wonderful city of Bath. I work in Bath but I don’t take too many photos there, so it was […]

Portraits: Shots from the Tenovus fashion shoot (winner of a CIPR award)

20 October, 2012 by amydavies

I have already written about my experiences of shooting the Tenovus “Worn by You, Loved by Us” earlier in the year, but I wanted to upload some shots in honour of the fact that the campaign has been nominated for a few CIPR awards, including best use of photography or design! Update: I’m thrilled to say that the campaign won three awards at the CIPR awards, including two silvers and one gold for Best Use of Photography or Design! Although […]

Portraits: Nina in Castle Arcade, Cardiff (shot with the Canon 650D and the Panasonic G5)

1 October, 2012 by amydavies

If you’re a regular reader of this blog (I must have at least one, surely?) you might know that the Castle Arcade is one of my absolute favourite places in Cardiff. Not only is it a great place for a wander around, filled with all kinds of curious shops and cafes, its beautiful architecture make it, in my opinion at least, a fantastic place to shoot portraits. So it was here I brought Nina, my latest subject, to shoot this […]

Portraits: Liz at The Bunkhouse, Cardiff (shot with the Nikon D800 and Canon 5D Mark III)

23 September, 2012 by amydavies

What do you do when two of the best cameras currently on the market come into the office at the same time? Obviously, you take them both out for a head to head shoot. This session pitched the Canon 5D Mark III against the Nikon D800. Both firmly in the semi-pro category (whatever that is), they  both retail for roughly the same price and are both lusted after by different groups of people. I photographed my beautiful friend Liz yet […]

Portraits: Elena in Bute Park (shot with the Sony a37)

19 July, 2012 by amydavies

These portraits were taken what seems like an age ago – when this big blanket of blue stuff hung in the sky and it was actually warm. Remember those crazy days of May when it was actually hot for a brief window of time? Ah to get that back again… Hopefully these will be an omen of an improvement in weather to come, and if not, hopefully they can distract for a moment anyway. I took these shots of Elena […]

Portraits: Sarah at Gwdihw, Cardiff (taken with the Nikon D3200)

16 June, 2012 by amydavies

I recently reviewed the Nikon D3200, a new entry-level DSLR. As part of my test, I shot some portraits of Sarah at Gwdihw, a local bar which has a pretty cool interior. I used a pretty basic set-up to capture these (as always), using only the kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8 lens for all of the shots. This year I’ve been lucky enough to use the camera at the very top of Nikon’s range (the D4) and this, almost […]

Portraits: Liz shot with the Sony RX100 (a compact camera)

12 June, 2012 by amydavies

These are some of my favourite photos from this year, and feature my ever-patient and ever-photographed friend Liz, who’s back with her beautiful red hair (remember her from Penarth?) Last week, I had the privilege of getting my hands on a new camera before it was even announced, the Sony RX100 (click this link to read my review on TechRadar… it’s the highest score I’ve ever given a camera by the way).

Portraits: Rachel at Cafe Citta, Cardiff

9 June, 2012 by amydavies

I’ve been meaning to blog these portraits of the gorgeous Rachel for some time. Shot originally for We Are Cardiff, lovely Rachel has now been swept away to work at the Edinburgh festival so her story is, for now at least, on hold. It seemed criminal not to show these photos though, being as she looked so god darned lovely. The location is Cafe Citta, a wonderful little restaurant in the city-centre of Cardiff. The owners were more than accommodating […]

Portraits: Lucy for the Cardiff Arcades Project (shot with the Nikon D800)

30 May, 2012 by amydavies

Just a quick post to guide you to my other website where I’ve posted a new set of images taken for the Cardiff Arcades Project. This a set of portraits of Lucy, the owner of a local record shop, Catapult Vinyl. She’s been a great supporter of the project and is always a friendly face in the arcades. For camera buffs, I used a Nikon D800 to capture these images, which performed really well on the day. For more information, […]

Published portraits: Digital Camera, N-Photo and PhotoPlus magazines

14 May, 2012 by amydavies

This month I’m extremely fortunate and proud to have three international news stand magazines on sale at once all featuring my recent portrait photography. In Digital Camera, I helped review the Nikon D800, so a photo of my regular model (teehee) Liz appears as part of that. I haven’t blogged this set of photos yet – they were taken in Barry Island and it’s on my ever-expanding to-do list. Meanwhile, in N-Photo, two portraits – another of Liz and one […]

Portraits: Elena, on location at the Bute Building (shot with the Canon 5D Mark III)

12 May, 2012 by amydavies

This was one of my favourite portrait shoots of recent times, not only because Elena is such a joy to photograph, but also because the location was my old University building – the Bute Building (part of Cardiff University). Elena is studying the same postgraduate diploma that I took what seems like a lifetime ago (it is in fact three years ago that I finished), so it was quite odd being back in the building again. It was a Bank […]

Portraits: Ali for We Are Cardiff

20 April, 2012 by amydavies

Here’s some images I shot of Ali for a recent We Are Cardiff portrait session. I met Ali at Madame Fromage, which I’ve had the pleasure of photographing for the Cardiff Arcades Project and is a favourite haunt of Ali’s. Despite protesting that he’d perhaps drunk a little too much red wine than you should on the night before a photoshoot, Ali was great fun to photograph and put up with me taking more pictures than is probably necessary. It’s […]

Portraits of Elena, Jen and Liz shot with the Olympus OM-D

12 April, 2012 by amydavies

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had the fun of having an extended play with the Olympus OM-D. Regular fans of my blog (there’s got to be at least one… hello Dad), may know that I travelled to Amsterdam earlier in the year to get my hands on a pre-production version of the camera, where I was very impressed by my initial usage of it. Having now spent a lot more time with it, I’m happy to say that […]

Portraits: Jennifer in Cardiff Bay (shot with the Nikon D800)

8 April, 2012 by amydavies

Another week and another awesome camera to get my mitts on! This time, it was the Nikon D800. After carrying the great behemoth that was the Nikon D4 around for the previous week, by comparison the D800 seemed almost small. Almost. For those anywhere near as geeky as me, you might know that the D800 is the headline grabbing camera of the year, with its 36 million pixel sensor. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse when taking […]

Portraits: Liz on Penarth Pier (shot with the Nikon D4)

1 April, 2012 by amydavies

This week, I had the pleasure of borrowing the Nikon D4 once again. A real powerhouse of a camera, I was really keen to shoot some portraits, and I’ve been begging my gorgeous friend Liz (look at that hair!) to pose for me for ages…. so mix those two together with the beautiful conditions and Penarth Pier and you’ve got (what I think) is a fantastic combination. These are some of my favourite portraits that I’ve taken… and really does […]

Birthday photobooth portraits

27 February, 2012 by amydavies

At the weekend, I decided to host a “photobooth party” for my birthday. It’s something I had seen on a few blogs and cropping up all over Pinterest, and, being a photographer myself, something I’d been dying to try. It also meant that I got to combine photography with making stuff, namely props for the booth which I also have a great fondness for. I really love the resulting photos, and the booth provided a great incentive to actually take […]

Portraits shot with the new Olympus OM-D E-M5

21 February, 2012 by amydavies

One of the best (or at least my favourite) parts of my day job is the chances I get to test out lots of beautiful new photography kit, often before it hits the shops. Last week, I was lucky enough to get invited along to Amsterdam for the European press launch of the new Olympus OM-D camera. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it… so off I went. I got to spend the day with the […]

Portraits: Lee for We Are Cardiff

3 December, 2011 by amydavies

I love shooting portraits, in fact if I had to pick one genre to only shoot from now on, it’d (probably) be that. There’s only one downside – finding willing victims volunteeers. That’s why it’s really a privilege and a lot of fun to be involved with the wonderful We Are Cardiff project, which brings together the stories of the people who live in the city. For this latest set of shots I photographed Lee, who wanted to be pictured […]

Portraits: Ardie for We Are Cardiff

26 October, 2011 by amydavies

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Ardie Collins for this week’s We Are Cardiff post. Truly the photography gods were smiling down us as Troutmark Books was open on a Sunday, Ardie’s first choice of location. For you see, Ardie is a writer. Not a fake writer like me. A writer who has actually written a book. A real book – Cult Fiction – that’s the name of the book, not the genre by […]

Portraits: Sarah for We Are Cardiff

17 June, 2011 by amydavies

I was lucky enough to photograph Sarah for this week’s We Are Cardiff post. She showed me this amazing location that’s hidden in plain sight – right at the top of St David’s carpark. Who knew? Anyway, never one to limit myself to just the one portrait, here’s the set of portraits that didn’t make it into the final story. Hope you enjoy – I know I had a lot of fun shooting them, and hopefully so did Sarah… I […]

Portraits: Jen in Bute Park

12 June, 2011 by amydavies

I took these photos a few weeks ago – you can tell by the fact that there’s Bluebells in a couple of shots. Next year I want to take advantage of this gorgeous season a bit better before it’s all over far too quickly. Not that I’ve got a problem with summer. I love that too. Anyway, this is descending into nonsense… enjoy some new portraits. If you’d like to discuss me shooting portraits for you, get in touch. P.S. […]
